of the Story

On nights of the full moon, the first Earl of Cork stares through the walls of Lismore Castle and speaks to things no one else can see. His youngest son, Robbie Boyle, has learned to watch in silence, and he is beginning to understand what his father’s great work will cost.

With his brother Francis and a wandering tutor named Isaac Marcombes, Robbie flees across Europe, from the walls of Geneva to a hidden Collegiate of scholars whose experiments are a Papal secret. Among alchemy, natural magic, spies and assassins, he must learn whether the gift in his blood is a blessing or a curse.

Recovered from the secret cellar of Mungret monastery, the coded diaries of Lord Boyle, set in order by Professor Samuel Cornelius Mandrake, September 1842.
